Option 1:In a 250-500 word essay, discuss 2-3 similarities that our current American society shares with ancient Greece. These similarities can be artistic, architectural, political, ideological, or religious, but be sure to include specific details and examples in your discussion. You may use material from the book, but I want to know your feelings and beliefs on the matter.

Explanation / Answer

Current American society has many similarites with the ancient Greece. One of the most important similarity is the idea of democracy. In ancient Greece democracy was practised like in current America although their methods is slightly different. In ancient Greece the form of democracy which was practised known as direct democracy.Here people can directly approach the government for expressing their views,opinions concerns etc without any intervention of the person in between. But in current America since the population is quite large as compared to the Ancient Greece so it is not possible or practical that each individual can directly approach the government separtely. So rather than following direct democracy, representative democracy is followed by the current America. This common person can directly approach the government for their grievances as well as the their ideas or opinions in common interests of people.

The ideas of modern America about various subjects like science,history, medicines,mathematics, philosophy. art, theatre etc were derived from Ancient Greece. The civilisations in ancient has shaped the modern America. Studying about them is like knowing more about the lives of modern America and how they both are related to the each other.

Also the Greek lays importance on the sports which is quite similar to that of modern America. For this they developed Olympic games in Greece. The modern America also represented the Olympic games here every two years.The Greeks believed that excercise and keeping fit is necessary for the young mens.

Another similarity in the Greek and modern Americans that they had great patriotism and nationalism feeling in both government and people. For them their regards towards their existence and power was quite high like the modern American. They had not given this feeling in the times of adversity and has spent their lives mostly in warfare than any other state. Similarly modern America and its government has also showed great respect and honour within the nation even in the times of diversity.

Though there are various similarities between both of them. But they are radically different from each other. In modern america there is great respect for women. Both are treated equally. But in Ancient Greece the women had lower positions in the society. They were expected to live a restricted life like staying at homes or not allowed to go out to attend religous festivals and cannot participate in politics.

Also their beliefs in several gods and goddesses quite different from the American beliefs. The Greeks the saw their Gods as greedy, cruel and lustful and were offended easily. Whereas in modern America God like Jesus are kind and always think of their people and cannot do any wrong. Also the ancient Greeks the practice of slaves were widespread unlike modern America.So I think that we cannot deny the similarities between ancient Greece and the modern America. But there are some beliefs and practices which are quite different between the both.
