Hi People of chegg!
I apologize for the fact that this question might be a long one, but i would really appreciate the help with this one. Thank you!
This is a cross section of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Write the geologic history of this area as interpreted from the relationships among the rock units you see. Note that each rock unit is labeled with a letter, and that certain other surfaces are also labeled with a letter (e.g., R and S). You can (and should) use this entire side of the paper to complete your geologic history. Your geologic history must be a story, replete with actions = verbs. You will receive no credit for a list of letters (e.g., A – C – R – L – M).
Some definitions you may find useful: . Granite: an igneous rock formed when magma solidifies deep under Schist: a metamorphic rock formed when sedimentary shale gets buried deeply and is heated and squeezed Dolomite: a sedimentary rock formed when limestone is altered by fluids which add Mg and convert the mineral calcite in limestone) to . . . Sill: an igneous rock formed when magma penetrates layered rocks and spreads out along a weakness in the layering, so that it takes on a tabular shape Shale: A sedimentary rock formed when very small fragments of quartz and clay accumulate at the bottom of a shallow sea or lake, get buried, and then get cemented together to form * Sandstone: same as shale, except the fragments are sand-sized and usually made up of the mineral quartz Limestone: a sedimentary rock formed when the skeletons of tiny marine animals (made of the mineral calcite) sink to the bottom of the sea and accumulate, get buried, and eventually cemented together into . * Group: a term used to describe a bunch of different rocks that typically occur together; almost always (and in this case) all sedimentary rocks Quartzite: formally a metamorphic rock formed when sandstone is heated and squeezed, but in this example-the Shinumo Quartzite-is the same thing as sandstone-a sedimentary rock made up of sand- sized fragments . Precambrian-a division of geologic time ranging from about 3 billion years to to 540 million years ago * Cambrian-a division of geologic time ranging from 540 million years ago to 485 million years agoExplanation / Answer
Vishnu schist is the oldest formation than all other formation that based on order of superposition and erosion. Then the Zoarester granite was intruded into the Vishnu schist. After intensive erosion of Vishnu schist and oarester granite non deposition took place there for som time with Gravel. Then the formation are followed Bass dolomite, Hakatai shale, Shinumo Quartzite, Dox sandstone, Chuar shales and Nankoweap Group. The igneous sill was inruded into Bass dolomite after it was formed. By tectonic activities the entire formations were slightly affected. So the igneous sill might be formed, This was all done in Precambrian period.
After that a period of non deposition took place. Then the stratums like Tapeats sandstone, Bright angel shale, Mauv limestone were formed. By the river action Gorges are formed recently.
