Question

give a detailed response to each question(PLEASE ANSWER ALL):

1. The idea of Uniformitarianism is central to our understanding of not only the geologic timetable, but also of every scientific principle in every other science discipline that uses comparative knowledge and physical observations as the basis for forming hypotheses. Explain why this principle anchors almost all scientific research and has been embraced as a cornerstone of Geology.

2. Explain how gaps in the stratigraphy of rock formations in Colorado may be reconciled (filled in) by looking at stratigraphy in other locations around the world.

3. Carbon dating is used to determine the age of once living organisms that are up to about 60,000 years old. Why is carbon unreliable for fossils or organic materials older than that? Do you think there might be a way in the future to use carbon to date objects older than that?

4. The idea of the Principle of Superposition seems pretty obvious - things on top of other things were put down after the things under other things, and are therefore "younger" than the things under them. Why do you think it's important in science to state the obvious in these principles and not to just expect scientists everywhere to "get the idea" that things on top of other things are put down in order of youngest (on top) to oldest (on bottom)?

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1:

Uniformitarianism is the basic law of geology which states that geologic processess occurred in geological past with same intensity all over the world. This principle always helped scientists because every research depends upon the basic laws, which propogates the work in direction. Therefore, this law gives the assumptions to make their work successful.

Answer 2:

The missing strata means the period of non-deposition or erosion, which also have significance in geology as it represents unconformity. This gaps can be filled in imagination by seeing the nearby locations of same geological time, as discssed above according to Uniformitarianism all the process occurred with equal intensity in same geological time.

Answer 3:

Carbon dating is only reliable on the rocks which are up to 60,000 years old because the radioactive carbon is only limited to this time span, after that it will be totally consumed. Therefore, it is unreliable to date the matter which is more than this time.

Answer 4:

It is very important to state on this fundamental, as it is also known as law of superposition. Because the ultimate source of rock formation comes from interior of earth such as lava/magma, and soon after depostion takes place by means of sediments, therefore this formation which is formed by the deposition would be younger than solidification of lava/magma. And this cycle is continuously working.
