Question

Given the following site conditions, identify the technology or technologies which should be considered for eliminating or significantly reducing the contamination problems. Explain the reason for your choice(s). What problems might be encountered in applying your choices? Is there additional information that would be helpful? If so, what kind?

• The site is an abandoned printing plant located in Northern Virgina.

• Both soil and groundwater are contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and other VOC’s that have a small Henry’s constant.

• The sediments are a heterogeneous mixture of various size sands with thin (2--4 inch) clay layers.

• The water table is approximately 15 feet below the ground surface.

Explanation / Answer

answer- there is printing plant was set up in Northern Virginia. Now it is abandoned. it generates solid waste which consist of empty container, used film packages, damaged plates, outdated material, developed film, bad printing or spoilage. there is also generation from waste water from printing plant it includes lubricant oil, photochemical , chemical plate coating, waste ink , clean up solvent. because of this abounded plant the soil and groundwater is contaminted with Volatile organic compound and other petroleum hydrocarbon. we have also observe that water table is 15 feet below the surface. the water from surfaceleaches out and contaminated the groundwater.

and for the elimination or removal of these chemical, inks, and soild waste we will use following method or techniques

1- graphic design- preparing layout on effective size of paper reduce the paper waste at cutting and binding stage. decrese the amount of ink coverage of layout.

2- material handling and storage

3- water segregation, reuse and recycling - recycle the material like ink, paper, solvents etc

4 photochemistry-

5- recycling of hydrocarbon, VOC and other contamination from soil and groundwater- alcohol and petroleum based ink are the major contributor to soil and groundwater pollution. for the removal of ink ultravoilet system can be used. this method is consist of photo polymerization process in this process mercury vapor lamp is used for the elimination of inks.

electron beam curable method is also eleminate the ink and other petroleum solvents in soil and groundwater.

we can also replace petroleum based ink by the the vegetable oil based ink like Soyabean oil.

these chemical like VOC , petroleum and alcohol are present in the clayed sediment. the presence of thin clay layer act as barrier it donot allow any fluid (polychloroethylene)or chemical to passes through them. traditional vaccum evacution technique will not effective in the removal of the these element from the soil.

soil fracturing is another method of remedial technology that is very helpful. it creakes the cracks with in the subsurface. jet water pressure in the cracks.then these gaps filled with fine sand. it keeps and cracks open. leaving contamination in clayey soil will result soil contamination for very long so it is necessary to eliminate them out.
