Question
ou have obtained this 1H NMR spectrum.
Which of these compounds is it? Explain your choice.
After you ran reaction with 3 g of ferrocene (MW= 186 g/mol), 3 mL of acetic anhydride (density= 1.082 g/mL, MW= 102 g/mol), and 0.3 mL of 85% HCl, you obtained 3.1 g of acetylated ferrocene (MW= 228 g/mol). What is the theoretical yield of the reaction? Show calculation.
a. 85% b. 3.1g c. 3.65 g d. 7.23g
Explanation / Answer
Answer
1) The H-NMR peaks suggests that the compound is diethyl ether. Peaks at 1.1 to 1.2 for alkyl group and 3.4-3.5 for ethers.
2) The reaction is an equimolar reaction.
Moles of ferrocene = 0.016; acetic anhydride = 0.0318. Since the acetic anhydride is present in excess moles to ferrocene the theoretical yield of the reaction is 100% That is, 0.016 moles of acetylated ferrocene or acetylferrocene is expected.
The actual yield based on the measurement is: (3.1/228)/0.016 = 0.8498 or 85%
