Question
this is the data we collected , and i need help with questions 1-3 , please show all the steps. thank youExperiment 1: The Birthday candle. Obtain a birthday candle and attach the candle to a watch glass by melting it slightly. Get the mass of the candle which will serve as the mass at time zero (or the initial mass). In this experiment mass with serve as the concentration of candle. Burn the candle for 30.0 seconds then blow it out and weigh it again. Repeat this process for at least three minutes. So you will have data at 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 90 seconds ...etc. Now complete the data table by taking the natural log of the mass of the candle and the inverse of the mass of the candle. You will plot the zero order, first order and second order graphs to determine which you think best describes the burning of the candle (remember you are looking for a straight line). What is the order of the reaction with respect to the candle wax? Explain your choice. Write the rate law with respect to the candle wax. What order reactant are we measuring as we do this reaction?
Explanation / Answer
Question #1:
In chemical kinetics , the reaction order with respect to certain reagent ( in the case of the candle wax ) is defined as the (exponential ) power at which the concentration term in the equation of rate is high.
If:
n moL [candle wax ] (s) + p moL O2 (g) -------------> x moL CO2 (g) + y moL H2O (g)
rate is V = [candle wax]nx [O2]p
Then:
Order of the reaction respect to the candle wax is: "n" order.
Question #2:
Order "n": rate is V = [candle wax]nx [O2]p
Question #3:
Oxigen is the other reactant do not measuring, but oxigen make possible the combustion reaction.
