Question
The case study in Chapter 2 included information about healthy cholesterol levels in the blood. There are several biological molecules essential to life, and the body needs them in certain amounts in order to function properly. Cholesterol is one of these molecules. Sometimes the body can make these molecules for the us, other times, we need to get them through our diet. Either way, the balancing of "just enough" versus "too much" is the role of homeostasis.
For this discussion please name another substance that is needed in the body but can be detrimental to homeostasis in large quanitities. Explain the harmful consequences.
Explanation / Answer
Another substance which is needed by the body is Sugar which can be detrimental to homeostasis when used in large quantities.
When disturbances to the homeostatic state occur on a chronic basis or can't be easily rectified, it leads to homeostatic imbalance. There are a number of things that can cause homeostatic imbalance, but the most prevalent is disease. For example, long-term illnesses like cancer or HIV disturbe the body's ability to function properly and it is unlikely that it will be returned to a homeostatic state.
