juCHAPTER 9 h Modern Synthesis and NA- ringing a Wor All Together in the 20th lt Century and Beyond The Modern Synthesis Modern evolutionary theory continued to develop since Darwin's time. The sig nificance of natural selection, as thc mechanism for evolutionary change became fully ideas on modern realized in the 20t century. As evolution was fitted together w genetics in the 1930s and 1940s, a new evolutionary synthesis emerged which camc to be known as "The Modern Synthesis." It is this union of contemporary ideas on evolution, and the principles of inheritance, via Mendelian genetics, that torms the backbone of modern biology Thomas Hunt Morgan The work of Thomas Hunt Morgan in his "Fly Room" at Columbia University beginning in the early 1900s highlighted the natural variation that exists in wild popu lations of organisms. Morgan collected wild fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), and identified many genetic variants that followed Mendelian inheritance patterns. Due to Morgan's success with Drosophila, laboratories throughout the world began stud es on fruit flies making Drosophila the first model organism for genetics. Although Morgan, early on, was a skeptic regarding natural selection as a driving force in evo lution, his research ultimately supported Darwin's concept of evolution via natural selection, as well as Mendel's ideas on inheritance. Morgan concluded that: The evidence shows clearly that the characters of wild animals and plants, as well as those of domesticated races, are inherited both in the wild and in domesticated forms according to Mendel's Law. Explanation / Answer

Modern synthesis emerged in 1930 's and 40's. Natural variations among wild type population was discoved by Thoams Hunt Morgan by working on Drosophila Malongoster that followed mendelian inheritance.Morgan theory supported both theory of Natural selection given by Darwin as well as Mendel's idea on inheritance. DNA was isolated from white blood cells by Miescher but he reffered it as a nuclein and found that nuclein is resistant to heat treament. the was amazed to find that nuclein was rich in phoaphate. Levene found that DNA is rich in phosphare, sugar and a base in 20th century. In 1944 Chargaff found that DNA varies from species to species and he also concluded that A=T and G=C. Watson and Crick revealed that in 1953 that the DNA is a double helix structure. In the double helical structure Adenine binds with Thymine and guanine binds with cytosine via hydrogen bond.

Future applications

DNA technology can be used to produce pharmaceuticals. the human DNA along with bacterial chromosomes can be used to produce insulin. In crux DNA technology can be used to produce transgenic animals as well as transgenic Plants.
