Question

We need to make a flow chart, then use extraction and recrystallization to isolate component to purify. What should we use as a solvent to spot on a thin layer chromatography silica plate? ,

Solvents: acetone, ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate, hexanes, dichloromethane

Aqueous solutions: 1M NaOH, 1M HCl, 3M NaOH, 3M HCl, 1 M NaHCO3, saturated NaCl

Drying Agent: sodium sulfate

a student wanted to purify one of the active components in an analgesic drug containing a mixture of components . the active compound of interest to the student was acetanilide. purify the active compound from the other component, aspirin provide data to show that your compound is pure.

an organic chemistry student was attempting to synthesize a 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde from benzaldehyde and the reaction did not go to completion and the student ended up with a mixture of both compounds.purify the4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde. provide data to show that your compound is pure

should i use melting point or a tlc?

Explanation / Answer

Aspirin and acetanilide are having different extent of hydrogen bondinng and hence different extent of solubility in the solvent. Hence they will be bound to the surface of silica gel (ability to form hydrogen bond due to presence of -OH group) at different extent. Hence they can be separated easily.
