Question
I did a titration of in Gen Chem II Lab and need a hand with some of my post-lab questions. KHP was the weak acid that we were trying to determine the concentration of. We titrated it with 0.1 M NaOH. We used a pH probe, but no visual indicator/dye. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_hydrogen_phthalate
6. The concentration of your standard NaOH solution was determined by titrating it with a standard HCl solution. (a) Write a balanced equation for this reaction (b) If it took 23.60 mL of NaOH to neutralize 25.00 mL of 0.1110 M HCl, what is the molarity of the NaOH solution?
Explanation / Answer
a) NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) --------> NaCl + H2O(l)
Now, moles of HCl required to neutralize NaOH = molarity of HCl solution*volume of HCl solution in litres = 0.111*0.025 = 2.775*10-3 moles
Now, NaOH & HCl reacts in the molar ratio of 1:1
Thus, moles of NaOH required = moles of HCl = 2.775*10-3
Thus, molarity of NaOH = moles of NaOH/volume of soltion in ltres = (2.775*10-3)/0.0236 = 0.1176 M
