Question
In each case below select the synthetic procedure/s that could be used to carry out the transformation, giving the alcohol shown as the single major product.
The procedures are:
Hydroboration/oxidation: alkene + BH3; then H2O2, -OH.
Oxymercuration: alkene + Hg(OAc)2, H2O; then NaBH4
answers to choosw from for both,. Hydroboronation/oxidation hydromurcuration both methods neither methods

Hydroboronation/oxidation hydromurcuration both methods neither methodsExplanation / Answer
In Case 1 : You can see the addition of H2O is in anti-Markonikoff addition. This happens only when the addition takes place as in Hydroboration/oxidation: alkene + BH3; then H2O2, -OH. Because of the steric hindrance, BH3 adds to the alkene, then H adds to the more substituted C creating a compound- BH2 complex. Then, OH adds to the less substituted product. So, in this case HYDROBORATION-OXIDATION happens.
In Case 2 : You can see the addition of H2O is in Markonikoff addition. This happens only when the addition takes place as in Oxymercuration: alkene + Hg(OAc)2, H2O; then NaBH4. When Hg(OAc)2 adds to the alkene, it takes place such that more stable carbocation is bonded to it and H is added to the less substituted carbon, then Hg(OAc)2 removes and OH adds to the more substituted C producing the product. So, in this case, OXYMERCURATION-DEMURCURATION happens.
