Question
In an adsorption batch test, substance Y is dissolved in the solution with an initial concentration of 250 mg/L. 0.3524 gram of granulate activated carbon (GAC) was added to 50 mL of such solution and had sufficient contact time with the solution. The substance Y solution now has a concentration of 25 mg/L. What is the mass of substance Y that is adsorbed to the GAC? What is mass to mass ratio of the adsorbed substance Y to GAC in mg/kg at this equilibrium concentration?

Explanation / Answer
1. concentration of solution Y = 250 mg/L;
mass of 50 mL of solution = 250 * 50 /1000 = 12.5 mg;
Mass of GAC = 0.3524;
after adsorption the mass of Y in solution = 25 * 50 /1000 = 0.125 mg;
amount of mass adsorbe = 12.5 - 0.125 = 13.475mg;
ratio = 0.3524 /12.475 = 0.028;
2. Mas to mas s taion in mg/jg = 28
