At room temperature, do you expect t-butyl chloride to be soluble in water? Justify your choice. At room temperature, do you expect the solubility of t-butyl chloride in water to be greater than, less than, equal to , or cannot be determined compared with the solubility of t-butyl chloride in 15% (v/v) ethanol in water? a) Yes at room temp. t-butyl chloride is soluble in water because it is a polar molecule and water is a polar solvent. Like dissolves like.


b) The solubility of t-butyl chloride in water will be less than the solubility in 15% ethanol. 15% ethanol solution is more polar as compared to water. Hence more solubility of polar t-butyl chloride in 15% ethanol solution


c) Yes it will be soluble in water again for the same reason as a


d) This time it will be less in 15% ethanol than that in water. The reason being Hydrogen bonding. In pure water there will be more H bonding of ethyl t- butyl ether as compared to that in 15% ethanol. Hence more solubility in water
