Question
1.why was it necessary in all the kinetic runs to keep constant the total volume of the reacgents afer mixing? (that is why was is necessary to add distelled water inverse propoetion to the quantity of solution 1 that was required?)
2. in this experiment, you determined the dependence of the reaction rate on the concentration of postassium iodate. decise an experiment for determining the dependence of the rate on the concentration od soduim sulfite.
3. In this experiment, you prepared three graphs using your experimental data. Some of these graphs should have produced stright lines. Explain in terms of the rate law for the reaction why these graphs produced straight lines?
Explanation / Answer
the factors that affect the rate of reactions
1)concentration
2)temperature
3)surface area
4)catalyst
5)light(in photochemical reactions)
In the experiments we are checking the effect of changing one of these factors on the rate of reaction. All the other factors like volume of reactants should be kept constant to do a fair test and comparison of results.eg. If you are testing for the effect of increasing surface area, then all the other four factors and the volume of reactants should be kept constant.
Even when testing for the effect of changing the concentration,we do not change the volume because concentration does not depend on volume(no.of moles) but no.of moles per given volume.
When temperature is increases reacting particles gain more kinetic energy and move faster. Therefore more frquent and effective collisions between particles. So rate of reaction increases.
Catalyst also provides a surface for the reactants to react and it also a provides an alternate reaction path with less activation energy. Therefore less energy is needed for the progress of reaction and therefore the rate of reaction increases.
