Question

Read Mt 17:40, Luke 8:26-39; 9:37-43; 11:24-26. Seizures are associated with a brain disorder known as epilepsy, and over 40 different disorders of the brains. In over 50% of cases, no obvious cause could be identified. In the bible people most likely suffering from seizures were considered to be possessed by demons. Describe the symptoms of epilepsy that would lead people to think that seizures were demonic in origin. Using your knowledge of neurophysiology, what do all these disorders have in common? In other words, what is the underlying cause of an epileptic seizure? (PLEASE DO NOT COPY WORD FROM WORD FROM A SOURCE!!! THANK YOU!!)

Explanation / Answer

Epilepsy is caused by abnormal activity in brain cells, seizures can affect any process in the brain coordinates. Seizures are one of the symptoms of epilepsy which is only visible. The duration of seizures typically last from a few seconds to a few minutes. A person may be alert or lose consciousness during the time of seizure. A person may not remember what was happened during seizure and may not even realize that he had an attack of seizure.

Causes:

The cause of the epilepsy can be traced from various factors. There is no single identifiable cause for epilepsy. It may results from genetic influence that run in families, brain trauma due to an accident or any other traumatic injury, infectious diseases, pregnant injury- oxygen deficiency, poor nutrition or the infections in the mother and may sometimes associates with developmental disorders such as autism and neurofibromatosis, brain fevers, brain infections such as meningitis or inflammation in the brain, dementia, stroke and other vascular diseases

Symptoms

Seizures that make a person to fall on the ground accompanied with muscles stiffen or jerks which are unable to control are easy to recognize. But many seizures which do not involve these reactions may be harder to notice. Some seizures make a person to stare at space for a few seconds and other type may consist only of a few muscle twists such as turn of the head or a visual disturbance or a strange smell. The onset is mostly during early childhood or during old age.

Seizure signs and symptoms may include:

·         Loss of awareness or consciousness accompanied with eye blinking and mouth twitching

·         Temporary ambiguous state

·         Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs

·         Lack of awareness or loss of consciousness

·         Psychic symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the type of seizure. In most cases, a person with epilepsy will tend to have the same type of seizure each time, so the symptoms will be similar from episode to episode.

Epileptic seizures may often happen without any warning before their start, although some people may have an aura (likely to be covered with a distinctive quality or environment) before the seizure starts. A seizure ends only when the abnormal electrical activity of the brain is stopped and slowly the brain activity begins to return to the normal stage.
