Question
Please help on how much of the reagants i should be using to make 4chlorochalcone. Thanks!
Please fill in the blanks
-Place _____g of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde into a 5ml conical vial
-Add ______ml of acetophenone and ______ml of 95%ethanol to the vial
containing your choice of aldehyde
-place the conical vial in a 50ml beaker
-stir with microspatula dissolving all solid
-may need to warm
-add _____ml of aqueous hydroxide solution to the mixture
-stir, maybe some cloudiness, until solid appears
-Scratch to induce crystallization
Here is a table on constants
NAME FORMULA MW(G/MOL) DENSITY MP(d.C) Hazards
Acetophone C8H8O 120.2 1.03g/ml 20 Flammable/irritant
sodium hydroxide NaOH 39.99 1.515g/ml 318 Irritant/reactive
methanol CH4O 32.04 0.7918g/ml -97.6 Flammable/irritant
Ethanol C2H6O 46.07 X -114 flammable/irritant
4-chlorobenzaldehyde ClC6H4CHO 140.57 X 45-50 Flammable/Irritant
4-chlorochalcone C15H11ClO 242.70024 X 113 Irritant
Explanation / Answer
Place __2___g of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde into a 5ml conical vial
-Add ____0.82__ml of acetophenone and ___2___ml of 95%ethanol to the vial
containing your choice of aldehyde
-place the conical vial in a 50ml beaker
-stir with microspatula dissolving all solid
-may need to warm
-add ___2__ml of aqueous hydroxide (5 M) solution to the mixture
-stir, maybe some cloudiness, until solid appears
-Scratch to induce crystallization
N.B: In this reaction two molar equivalents of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde ( 0.0142 mol) react with one molar equivalent of acetophenone (0.007 mol) to form a substituted 4chlorochalcone product
No of mole of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde = weight / molecular mass = 2 / 140.57 = 0.0142 mol
0.007 = weight of acetophenone / 120.2
=> weight of acetophenone = 0.8414 g
=> Volume of acetophenone = 0.8414 / 1.03 = 0.82 mL
