Question

This is the lab assignment:

OBJECTIVES:

1.    To simulate the enzymatic conversion of pyruvate to ethanol.

2.    Be able to follow the reaction progress using the TV monitor.

3.    Purify the final product via distillation.

4.    To analyze the product using 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy.

INTRODUCTION:

In the body, pyruvate is converted by yeast under anaerobic conditions to ethanol and carbon dioxide.  This is called alcohol fermentation.  This fermentation process has been known for more than 2500 years and is, of course, the fundamental step by which alcoholic beverages are made.

The fermentation process

Explanation / Answer

During the liquid-liquid extraction with water, which layer was your final product in?

a. Upper organic layer

b. Lower organic layer

c. Upper aqueous layer

d. Lower aqueous layer

The product is an alcohol. It's organic. After extraction with water, organic layer is on the upper layer since it is less dense than water.
