Question
Hi does anyone know how to calculate the answers to these 2 problems? I have the answers just need to understand how they got the answers and understand every step. Thank you. 1. Calculate the cell emf for the following reaction at 25C Ni(s)+2Cu+2(0.010 M)----->Ni+2 (0.0010M) + 2 Cu+ (1.0M)
answer is 0.37V
2. The measured voltage of a cell in which the following reactions occurs is 0.96V: H2(g, 1.0 atm) +2 Ag+ (aq,1.0M) -----> 2H+ (aq, ph=?) + 2 Ag (s). Calculate the ph of the H+ (aq) solution.
Answer: 2.7
Thank you!!!!
Explanation / Answer
E(cell) = Eo(cell) - (0.0592 / 2) log ([H+]^2 / [Ag+]^2)
0.96 = 0.80 - (0.0592 / 2) log ([H+]^2 / [1]^2)
Remember that log [H+]^2 = 2 log [H+]
0.96 = 0.80 - 0.0592 log [H+]
Remember that pH = -log[H+]
0.96 = 0.80 + 0.0592 pH
pH = (0.96 - 0.80) / 0.0592 = 2.703
