Question

Write the balanced net ionic equation for the following reaction in a basic solution and describe/identify each step.

Fe(OH)2 (s) + CrO42- (aq) --> Fe(OH)3 (s) + Cr(OH)4- (aq)

Here are the steps...

1. Separate the unbalanced reaction into half-reactions (oxidation/reduction)

2. Balance each with regard to atoms other than O and H.

3. Balance both half-reactions for O by adding H2O.

4. Balance both half reactions for H by adding H+.

5. Balance both half-reacions for charge by adding electrons.

6. Add the balanced half reactions back together and cancel the electrons.

7. For each H+ ion in the final equation, add one OH- ion to each side of the equation, combining the H+ and OH- to make H2O.

8. Make any additional cancellations made necessary by new H2O molecules.

Please follow the steps given! THANK YOU

Explanation / Answer

Fe(OH)2 -------> Fe(OH)3

Balancing O

Fe(OH)2 + H2O -----> Fe(OH)3

Balancing H+

Fe(OH)2 + H2O ----> Fe(OH)3 + H+

Balancing Charge

Fe(OH)2 + H2O ------> Fe(OH)3 + H+ + e-

Now for CrO4 2- ------> Cr(OH)4-

same steps to be followed

Since O is balanced, no need of addding H2O

Balancing H+

CrO 4- + 4H+ ------> Cr(OH)4-

Balancing Charge

CrO4 - + 4H+ + 4e- ----> Cr(OH)4-

Now the two half cell equation becomes,

Fe(OH)2 + H2O ------> Fe(OH)3 + H+ + e- --------------(1)

and CrO4 - + 4H+ + 4e- ----> Cr(OH)4- --------------(2)

Multiply (1) by 4 to make 4e-

=> 4Fe(OH)2 + 4H2O ------> 4Fe(OH)3 + 4H+ + 4e- --------------(3)

Add (2) and (3)

=> 4Fe(OH)2 + CrO4 - + 4H2O ------> 4Fe(OH)3 + Cr(OH)4 - (Final Equation)
