Question
(a) A student ran a chromatogram for bismuth(III), Bi3+ following the procedure of this experiment. The solvent front traveled 81 mm and the distance from the 2-cm line to the center of the Bi3+ spot was 33mm. Based on these data, what is the Rf value for Bi3+ in the acetone/HCL solvent?
(b) Consider the chromatogram of an unknown solution, in which the solvent front has traveled 96 mm. If you knew that the unknown solution contained Bi3+ at what distance from the 2-cm line would you expect to find the center of the Bi3+ cation spot?
Explanation / Answer
(a) Rf = distance travelled by Bi3+/distace travelled by solvent front
= 33/81
= 0.4074 = 0.41
(b) Distance travelled by Bi3+ = Rf x distance travelled by solvent front
= 0.4074 x 96
= 39 mm
