Question
Suppose you decided that there is a bacterium in soil that could use far red light for a source of energy. Then you figure out how to make an enrichment medium:a.if sun light was to be the energy source you would have to(?BLANK?) sunlight to illuminate the culture so that only far red light using bacteria could grow. The medium would most likely also have to eliminate (?BLANK?)
b. For this medium you could use as media ingredients:
sulfur source: (BLANK)
phosphate source: (BLANK)
nitrogen source: (BLANK)
carbon source: (BLANK)
c. You added these ingredients so that the (fill-in the blank with one word only)
carbon source would be converted to: (BLANK)
nitrogen source would be converted to: (BLANK)
sulfur source would be converted to: (BLANK)
phosphate source would be converted to: (BLANK)
I haven't gotten a clue on how to fill this in, any direction would be greatly appreciated.
Explanation / Answer
a.if sun light was to be the energy source you would have to focus the petri plates with culture media in the area where sun light is seen, and block other wavelengths of light, allowing only the far red sunlight to illuminate the culture so that only far red light using bacteria could grow.
The medium would most likely also have to eliminate other bacteria that grow in normal visible light.
b. sulfur source: sulphates and thiosulphate can be used
phosphate source: phosphates of salt can be used
nitrogen source: ammonia is good source
carbon source: glucose and other carbohydrates are used
c. carbon source would be converted to: Carbon dioxide (and organic compounds required to the microbe)
nitrogen source would be converted to: nitrogen bases and amino acids
sulfur source would be converted to: sulphur containing amino acids
phosphate source would be converted to: ATP
Hope it helps you.
