Question

For lab we will dispense 0.5 mL of 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol into a 10-mL Erlenmeyer flask. Then add 3 mL of glacial acetic acid and 3 mL 6% aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution. After cooling and stirring for 1 hour we will need to perform several extractions. First with three 5-mL portions of diethyl ether, then with two 3-mL portions of saturated aqueous sodium carbonate solution, and lastly with two 3-mL portions of 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide. I want to keep my ether layer throughout these extracts. Where is my ether layer throughout the steps? I was thinking it would always be on the bottom.

Explanation / Answer
