A male patient was admitted to the hospital their lab results came back which made you feel uneasy. The results indicated that the patient had the flowing high levels of antibodies: Maternal IgG, Maternal IgM and Maternal IgA. You asked for the labs to be redone and the new results showed the following: high levels of Maternal IgG and Maternal IgA and high levels of IgM.

Why you did you reject the first set of results, explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

Question 1. The high levels of IL-6 are associated with high levels of IgA and IgG. Some of the metabolic syndromes are associated with such abnormally high levels of serum immunoglobulins. The results were asked to check again as these levels are not usually seen in a normal male. Thus , it is important to confirm the results and check their reproducibility, to ignore any types of misdiagnosis.

Question 2. The patient may be having higher levels of immunoglobulins in response to some of the infections or some serious disease that may have raised this symptom. This does not indicate in any way the age of the patient.

Question 3. The patient may either be suffering from a metabolic disease or some form of multiple myeloma, or a form of polyclonal gammopathy.

Question 4. To confirm the disease , other tests have to be done that would include a complete blood test, enzyme tests, essential elements tests etc that might confirm other abnormally elevated levels. Also, in order to confirm the presence of some myelomas , there can be radiological scans done followed and by other tests to confirm the disease.
