Question

At a certain temperature, 0.620 mol of SO3 is placed in a 4.00-L container. At equilibrium, 0.170 mol of O2 is present. Calculate Kc Carbon disulfide is prepared by heating sulfur and charcoal. The chemical equation is How many grams of CS2(g) can be prepared by heating 18.4 moles of S2(g) with excess carbon in a 9.05 L reaction vessel held at 900 K until equilibrium is attained? Phosphorus pentachloride decomposes according to the chemical equation A 0.279 mol sample of PCIs(g) is injected into an empty 4.20 L reaction vessel held at 250 degreeC. Calculate the concentrations of PCl5(g) and PC3(g) at equilibrium.

Explanation / Answer

at equi SO3 moles = 0.62-2x , O2 moles = x , SO2 moles = 2x

given O2 moles at equi = 0.17 = x , hence equi [SO3] = ( 0.62-2(0.17))/4 = 0.07 M

equi [SO2] = 2 x 0.17/4 = 0.085

now Kc =[SO2]^2 [O2]/[SO3]

= ( 0.085^2 x 0.17)/( 0.07^2)

= 0.25

2) at equi S2 moles = 18.4-x , CS2 moles = x

Kc = 9.4 = [Cs2]/[S2] = ( x/9.05)/(18.4-x)/9.05

9.4 = x/(18.4-x)

x=16.63 moles

CS2 in gras = moles x mol wt = 16.63 x 76.139 = 1266.2 gm

3) at equi [PCl5] = ( 0.279-x)/4.2 , [PCl3]=[Cl2] = x/4.2

Kc = [PCl3][Cl2]/[PCl5]

1.8 = ( x/4.2)^2 / ( 0.279-x)/4.2

x = 0.2464 ,

[PCl3] = ( 0.2464/4.2) = 0.059 M

[PCl5] = ( 0.279-0.2464)/4.2 = 0.0078 M
