Question

the following reaction takes placein a reactor:

100g moles of the feed, with a composition of 40% methane, 50% chlorine, and 10%nitrogen, are fed to the reactor every hour. the converion of the limiting reactant is 67%.

1. determine which species is the limiting reactant using appropriate calculation.

2. draw a flowsheet for the process and label all species and unknowns clearly.

3. carry out a degree-of-freedom analysis for this problem

4. determine the composition of the product steam leaving the reactor (i.e. percentage of CH3Cl, HCl, etc.)

the following reaction takes placein a reactor: CH4 + Cl2 CH3Cl + HCl 100g moles of the feed, with a composition of 40% methane, 50% chlorine, and 10%nitrogen, are fed to the reactor every hour. the converion of the limiting reactant is 67%. 1. determine which species is the limiting reactant using appropriate calculation. 2. draw a flowsheet for the process and label all species and unknowns clearly. 3. carry out a degree-of-freedom analysis for this problem 4. determine the composition of the product steam leaving the reactor (i.e. percentage of CH3Cl, HCl, etc.)

Explanation / Answer

Ch4 ----> 40 gms ---> moles = 40 / 16 = 2.5 moles

Cl2 ----> 50 gms ---> moles = 50/71

N2 = 10gms / 28

so the limiting reagent above is N2

As mentioned the conversion of the limitiong reagent is 67% of the total so

total moles of N2 were initially = 10/28

so the moles of Limiting reagent reacting = 0.67 * 10 /28 = 0.24 moles

this is the amount of moles that each of the reacting species would be reacting

moles of Ch4 remaining = 2.5-0.24 = 2.26 moles

moles of Cl2 remaining = 50/71 - 0.24 = 0.464 moles

degree of freedom can be related with the no. of molecules in the system which are colliding with each other and thi value is = 3
