Question
Calculations
The wieght of crucible lid off: 16.441g
The wieght of crucible +lid :29.190g
The total wieght of crcible + lid +hydrate of BaCl2.xH2O: 32.271g
The total wieght of crcible + lid +hydrate of BaCl2.xH2O after heating:31.813
The total wieght of crcible + lid +hydrate of BaCl2.xH2O after second heating : 31.807 g .
1: what is the mass of original hydrate sample?
2:mass of anhydrous BaCl2 (mass remaining after heating without crucible and lid mass)?
3: mass lost upon heating?
4:%mass of water in the sample?
5:moles of water in your sample , moles of anhydrous salt in your sample , and mole ratio of water to salt?
Explanation / Answer
1) mass of original hydrate sample - ( wt of crucible + lid + hydrate - wt of crucible + lid)
= 32.271 - 29.190= 3.081 g
2) mass of anhydrous BaCl2 - ( wt of crucible + lid + hydrate after 2nd heating - wt of crucible + lid)
= 31.807 -29.190 = 2,617
3) mass lost upon heating - 3.081 - 2.617 = 0.464g
4)% of water lost- 0.464/ 3.081 * 100 =15.06%
5) moles of water - 0.464 /18 = 0.025 ( no of moles = wt of solute in gms / molwt)
moles of anhydrous sample - 2.617 / 208.32 = 0.01479 ( mol wt of BaCl2 - 208.32 , of water -18 )
mole raio of water to anh .sample = 0.025 / 0.01479 =1.690
