Question

Welcome class to our first discussion board! This discussion will focus on two of my favorite topics in nursing: nursing history and nursing theory! One of the most eye opening moments for me as a student was learning about the intricate details of Florence Nightingale and her influence on nursing as a profession. Hard to believe that we were a profession focused on care but governed by medical authorities. Nursing, by definition is the practice of caring whereas medicine is the practice of curing. While these two fields work synergistically to provide for optimal outcomes, our focus within nursing is very different and Florence realized that and truly helped set the stage for nursing practice, training, research and the science of nursing. To my students who have been in this field 10+ years, how has nursing practice evolved for you? Major milestones in care? For those of you just entering practice, what are your predictions for change in the future? One of my favorite nursing theorists is Jean Watson - Theory of Human Caring. Do a little research on her theory and let us know how you can apply it in today's practice? OR do you already see it in practice? I look forward to seeing your responses!! Dr. Brittain

Explanation / Answer

Nothing can serve humanity more than nursing. No doubt doctors do a lot for the patients, but its the nurse with whom a patient makes stronger bond. Its not only the patient but the his/her family gets equally benefited from the work of nurse. Theory of nursing by Jean Watson explanins a wonderful explantion which should be followed during nursing. A nurse should be more responsible for the needs/feeling of the patients. By understanding the need of the patient, a good environment should be created for the patients that includes the air, water, food, noise etc. And the most important thing is the feeling of respect for the patient.

We actually see these things happening in practise also. Nurses in this profession are fully dedicated to their work.
