Question
Chapter 2 talks about the "American" beliefs and values about healthcare and Chapter 3 talks about the history and chronology of Healthcare in the U.S. (Some dicussion about other countries will help)
Based on the combination of information in those 2 chapters and your knowledge, experience and general opinions.
Discussion: What in these 2 chapters do YOU think has led to the healthcare developed in the U.S. up to 5 years ago OBAMACARE and NOW what elements have led to the high level of interest and demand to where the "system" “MAY” go tomorrow? Obviously, the chapters do not talk a lot about the ACA or OBAMACARE and much of what is happening currently in the healthcare debate is politics but you can weave articles or other knowledge into your post to help explain “why we are at this high stakes healthcare crossroads in America
This is a little tougher question but the learning process will be beneficial as we look at the past, present and future of healthcare. Remember this is an MBA Class so think before writing.
Explanation / Answer
The Affordable Care Act expands Medicaid coverage to include Americans with family incomes at or below 133 percent of federal poverty guidelines (currently $30,657 for a family of four). This simply included the African-American population below poverty line.
The ACA increases the racial and ethnic diversity of doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals. The overall number of clinicians in the National Health Service Corps has been tripled due to ACA. Scholarships and loan repayment are provided to medical students and primary care physicians, as well as other health professionals, in exchange for a commitment to serve in an underserved area. It is important to note that African American physicians make up about 17.8 percent of physicians.
One more initiative of ACA was to make it easier for people with disadvantaged backgrounds to become health care professionals. These initiatives will help the health care providers to better understand the needs of African Americans and other minorities. Communication with patients would also be improved in this way. This process is the main explanation for development of healthcare in U.S. in the past five years.
Why we are at high stakes healthcare crossroads in America?
The affordable care act (ACT) was implemented to combat racial disparities and provide health services to the minorities. There were two subsets of people who were benefitted from the ACA. One group was the people with color, and the other group was people with mental, behavioral and substance-abuse problems. The affordable care act provided for appropriate medical treatment for mentally affected people. Please note that this treatment was provided at the same rates for white and black.
African-Americans were greatly benefitted from the same. Reports state that about 3.8 million African Americans were insured who were previously uninsured by 2016. It is important to note that these people comprise about 1/3rd of the total population of America. This simply states that greater opportunities for access were created.
