Question

4. You have several 1000.0 ml volumetric flasks, a 500g bottle of NaCl and a bottle of sucrose (C12H22O11) that is the same size. a. You measure out 100.0g of NaCl, put it into the volumetric flask, dissolve it in water and bring the volume to the mark. What is the concentration of the solution in molarity? b. You want to make sucrose solution with the same molar concentration, how much solid sucrose must you add to the volumetric flask? c. After making up the solutions, you get a phone call. When you get back you find that you did not yet label the flasks and do not remember which is which. What is the easiest way to tell the 2 solutions apart assuming that you have all the equipment you had in lab 8?

Explanation / Answer

1] molarity = moles of solute/volume in litres

moles of NaCl = 100/58.44 = 1.711

volume = 1000ml= 1litre

molarity = 1.711/1 = 1.711M

2] 1 mole of sucrose = 342.29gms

1.711 moles of sucrose = 586.65 gms

so 586.65 gms of sucrose should be added to get the same molar concentration.

3] the solution which seems to me more concentrated is SUCROSE

and less concentrated is NaCl.
