Question

on September 6, a 6-year-old boy experienced fever, chills, and vomiting, On September 7, he was hospitalized with diarrhea and swollen lymph nodes under both arms. On September 3 the boy had been scratched and bitten by a cat. The cat was found dead on September 5, and Yersinia pestis was isolated from the cat. Chloramphenicol was administered to the boy from September 7, when Y pestis was isolated from him. On September 17, the boy's temperature returned to normal; and on September 22, he was released from the hospital. When was the prodromal period of this boy's disease? 4. Describe the role of the skin and mucous membranes in immunity. List the effector functions of antibodies.

Explanation / Answer

3. Prodormal period of the disease was between 3rd- 6th September before the boy showed severe symptoms.

4. Skin and mucous membrane in immunity. These act as the first line of defence which act as both physical and chemical barriers to defend the body from infection. The skin acts as a barrier between the invading pathogens and acts a a waterproof barrier. Unless there is a crack or unusual opening in the skin, microbes cannot enter. The mucous membrane or the mucous also acts as a barrier as it contains enzymes that would kill the bacterial cells. The mucus also traps the invading pathogens.

5. The effector functions of antibodies are :

- block ligand receptor interactions

- bring about cell lysis. This occurs by complement depend cytotoxicity activation.

- interactions with Fc receptors on effector cells and bring about antibody dependent cellular toxicity. .
