Because the cartilage is a supple,elastic,springy and connective tissue, so it provides support to the ear but they are less rigid than the bones due to this they are responsible for the flexible movement of ear. And it is more stable than muscles.

Hair,thumbnail and toenails are made up of a tough,strong and protective protein called keratin.Which is harder than cartilage because it has to protect the fingers and hair from external damage.
