Question

a) If the initial sample is 2.75 g, what mass of the original iridium-192 remains after 15 Number g b) Estimate the half-life of the radioisotope, Number days c) How many days would it take for three-fourths of the sampie to decay? Number days the tumor while lowering the risk of damage to healthy tissue Iridium-192 is often used in the head or bre Answer the following three questions (a, b, and c) based on the radioactive decay curve of iridium-192, shown below. Click on the graph and move the mouse over a point to get values for that point.

Explanation / Answer

(a) As can be sen from the graph, after 15 days, about 87.5 % of the sample remains.
Thus, out of 2.75 g of the sample, the mass that remains after 15 days is rac {87.5}{100} imes 2.75=2.41 g.
(b) As can be seen from the graph, after 75 days, about 50% of the sample remains.
This corresponds to the half life period.
(c) Whn the thre fourth of the sample decays, one fourth of the sample will remain.
As can be seen from the graph, 25% of the sample remains after about 152 days.
