These questions are to guide your studying. They do not cover all of the topics that may be on exams. The chemical reaction of photosynthesis looks like the reverse of cellular respiration. Why is it inaccurate to say that the two processes are the reverse of each other? A plant is treated with a drug that stops the Calvin cycle. Can the light reactions still continue indefinitely? Examine the structure of a chlorophyll molecule. Which part of chlorophyll is more associated with the middle of the thylakoid membrane, and why? The light reactions make ATP and NADPH. So does that mean that light is converted into ATP and NADPH? What are the reactants and products of the light reactions? What are the reactants and products of the Calvin cycle? What is the difference between RuBP and RuBisCO? Trace the pathway taken by an electron that starts out in water and ends up in G3P. The name "dark reactions" is often used to describe the Calvin cycle. Why is this name misleading? Where do plants obtain most of the mass that they use to make sugars? Are the reactions of the Calvin cycle exergonic or endergonic? How do you know? Compare the citric acid cycle and the Calvin cycle, in general terms. What do they have in common?Explanation / Answer
Hi,
1. Photosynthesis is a process where sugar and O2 are released with the help of light energy, wherein, Cellular respiration involves liberation of ATP(Energy-rich molecules) and CO2 along with water by intake of sugar and O2.
Even though the reactants to cellular respiration are the end-products of photosynthesis chemical reaction, the photosynthesis requires radiant energy (Light as source) and it will not utilise ATP as the energy.
2. No, for the production of glucose by converting ATP, NADPH and CO2 Calvin cycle is vital. So, the light reaction might not continue.
3. Stroma. It is an alkaline fluid which is present outside the thylakoid membrane. It is protein rich, which aids in photosynthesis.
4. No. Light is used as a form of energy which helps in electron and proton drive across the membrane for generation of ATP and NADPH.
5. The products of the light reaction are ATP, NADPH, and O2. Wherein the reactants involve water (Along with the light energy).
6. The reactants of Calvin cycle- CO2, NADPH, ATP which are the products of light dependent reactions.
The major product of Calvin cycle is G3P (Glyceradehyde-3-Phosphate) along with inorganic phosphate.
7. Rubp (Ribulose-1-5-bisphosphate) is an organic substrate involved in photosynthesis. It is an anionic double phosphate ester of ribulose (Ketopentose). Rubp acts like substrate used by Rubisco enzyme in CO2 fixation which leads to the formation of 2 G3P.
10. Carbon from photosynthesis is the source of mass in plants.
