Question
using the data matched with the experiment, answer the following questions.
1. what happened when the carbon dioxide levels increased to 700ppm.
2. why did the plants react the way you described in question 1 above? Make sure to use specific course concepts in your description. you must discuss the molecules involved and the specific processes.
3.what happened to the plant height and oxygen released when only oxygen was used?
4. why did the plants react the way you described in question 3? must discuss the molecules involved and specific processes.
5. let's assume the amount of carbon dioxide continues to increase in the atmosphere and you are curious about how the tree's might react. you predict the tree's will grow larger trunks and be overall, much larger than tree's today. why might this be a reasonable prediction? you must discuss the molecules involved and the specific processes?
Experiment 320 ppm 700 ppm co Match experiment results te the experiment number in each results panel lo indicate which results would follow from which experiments. Each column should contain a A, B, and C Res Oxygen Levels Plant Growth TimeExplanation / Answer
As per the picture, answers are in the following order:
A B
C A
B C
1.When CO2 levels are raised to the levels of 700 ppm, the phostosynthesic efficiency is increased, leading to increased plant height.
2. When the levels of CO2 are increased, the carboxylase activity of RUBISCO (chief enzyme of photosynthetic dark reaction) predominates over its oxygenase activity, which results into more fixation of CO2 into carbohydrates during dark reaction. This leads to increased yield of plant.
3. In presence of only oxygen ( no CO2), plant height will remain same and the oxygen concentration will be depleted.
4. In the absence of CO2, photosynthetic dark reaction will not take place. Therefore no carbohydrate will be formed and the plant height will remain as such. Moreover oxygen will activate the oxygenase activity of rubisco which leads to photorespiration. Also TCA cycle and electron transport chain will consume some atmospheric oxygen leading to decrease in its concentration.
5. Increase height of tree trunks in high CO2 conc is due to the increase in the rate of photsynthesis, due to activation of carboxylase activity of Rubisco, and other enzymes of dark reactions, which leads to more fixation of CO2 and plant height.
