EG, a 13-year-old teenager from Redondo Beach, California and his parents were vacationing in the French Alps atop the famous Col de la Madeleine. Wanting to do his part so his parents could have a relaxing vacation, EG decided to make them breakfast. Using his familiar techniques from home he made them each two slices of toast with butter, two eggs he put in boiling water and let steep for four minutes, a half-cup of cottage cheese topped with three pear slices. Later that evening, after dinner, his parents had a fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. The next morning they were also experiencing bloody diarrhea and were ill enough to visit the local emergency room. What was EG
Explanation / Answer
The parents were suffering from Salmonella, or food posioning.
At higher altitudes the air pressure is lower.
Boiling point is defined as the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid equals the atmospheric pressure.
Because less heat was required to achieve boiling the Salmonella in the eggs did not denature. Causing the parents illness.
To fix this leave the eggs in the water for a longer period of time, or add salt to the water to raise the boiling point.
