Question
a. You are conducting an experiment where you need the volume of a box; you take the length, height, and width measurements and then multiply the values together to find the volume. You report the volume of the box as 0.302 m3. If two of your measurements were 0.7120 m and 0.52145 m, what was the other measurement?
The value is?

Length? =
The number of sig figs are?
b. If you were to add the two measurements from the first part of the problem to a third length measurement with the reported result of 1.520 m, what was the value of the third measurement?
Explanation / Answer
Volume of a box = length x height x width
Two measurements were 0.7120 m and 0.52145 m. Hence the third measurement is
0.302m3 / 0.7120m x 0.52145m =0.813418934 m= 0.813 m
(i) we have to express upto three significant number as the number with lowest significant number is three.
length = 0.813 m
(ii) if we add two measurement from the first problem the answer will be
0.7120 m + 0.52145 = 1.233
here we will consider only four significant number because when measurements are added or subtracted, the answer can contain no more decimal places than the least accurate measurement.
Now, subtracting we have
1.520-1.233 = 0.297m
(Note that on the l.h.s both numbers have four significant number)
