Question

I'm not just looking for the answer, I really wan't to understand chemistry! so if you can, please simplify your explanation as I will be very greatful. I will give max points to the best answer if it is agreed to answer my questions after if I still don't understand. Thanks!

A) The solubility of air in water is approximately 2.1 x 10^-3 M at 20degreesC and 1.0 atm. Calculate the Henry's Law constant of air.

B) Is the Kh constant value of air approx. equal to the sum of the Kh valuesof N2 and O2 because these two gases make up 99% of the gases in the air? yes or no?

Explanation / Answer

A) Henry law const K = C /P = 2.1 x 10^-3 / 1 = 2.1 x 10^-3 M atm^-1

B) Kh air = C ( air) / P(air) , Kh ( N2) = C (N2) / P(N2) , Kh ( O2) = C ( O2) /P( O2)

now we have C (air) = C (N2) + C(O2)

and P (air) = P(N2) + P(O2)

hence we cannot have Kh(air) = C( air) / P (air) = C(N2)/P(N2) + C(O2) /P(O2)

hence Kh air = Kh (N2) + Kh ( O2) is not valid
