Question

Question 2 of 9 Map A sapling learning Heliox is a helium-oxygen mixture that may be used in scuba tanks for divers working at great depths. lt is also used medically as a breathing treatment A 9.25-L tank holds helium gas at a pressure of 1216 psi. A second 9.25-L tank holds oxygen at a pressure of 323.2 psi. The two gases are mixed in a 9.25-L tank. If the temperature remains the same throughout the process, what is the pressure of the gas mixture in the tank? Assume ideal gas behavior. Number psi

Explanation / Answer

According to Dalton's law of partial pressure, the partial pressure exerted by a gas in a mixture of non-reactive gases, is the pressure that gas would exert if it alone occupies the entire volume of the mixture, at the same temperature as that of the mixture.

Therefore, when Helium and Oxygen were mixed together in a 9.25 L tank volume. the total pressure in the tank would be sum total of both the pressures.

Thus, Ptotal (atm) = PHe (atm) + PO2 (atm) = 82.74 atm + 22.0 atm = 104.74 atm.
