Question

For A, I know how to write the rate law, but I'm not sure about the rest of the question.

For B, I know what they are talking about, but I have no idea how to do it.

In the reaction below, the forward reaction is known to be first order in both PCI3 and CI2. The reverse reaction is first order in PCI5. PCl3(g) + CI2(g) PCls(g) + energy Write the rate law for the forward reaction. What factors determine the numerical values of the rate constant and of each exponential term in the rate law? Propose a mechanism for the forward reaction that is based on the molecular collision theory and describe each event (elementary process) in that mechanism.

Explanation / Answer

A) rate law = rate= k [PCl3]1 [Cl2]1

     a) rate constant value determained only by temperature

           from the arrhenius equatio K = A e-Ea/RT

           from this temperature increases rate constant value also increses.

           no other factors effect the rate constant

b) the powers in rate law (exponential terms ) determained by experiment only. rate law purely experimental

B)

   before collision molecules are activated

       1) formation of activated molecule

   PCl3 + Cl2 ----------------------> *PCl3   + Cl *   (slowest step rate determaining step)

         2) second step

    *PCl3 + Cl2 -------------> PCl4*   + Cl*

       3) finam product formation

         PCl4* + Cl2 ---------------> PCl5 + Cl*
