Question
Creation and remediation of a sample pond:
How would one use sodium hydroxide to precipitate lead and copper out of a solution composed of Cu(NO3)2 and Pb(NO3)2?
* The maximum contaminate limit for lead given by the EPA is .015mg/L and copper is 1.3mg/L
* the NaOH must be able to precipitate the metals out so that the concentration remaining in the solution is at least 0.015mg/L for lead ions amd 1.3mg/L for copper ions.
* Our group can contol the initial concentrations of Cu(NO3)2 and Pb(NO3)2 seperately before mixing them together.
* We have 0.1M, 1.0M, and 6.0M of each solution (Cu(NO3)2, Pb(NO3)2, and NaOH) to work with.
Explanation / Answer
When the reaction occurs, Copper(II) hydroxide (Cu(OH)2) and Lead (II) Hydroxide (Pb(OH)2) will form. A blue precipitate from Cu(OH)2 and a white precipitate from Pb(OH)2 can be collected.
