Question
True and flase questions trip me up. I would like to compare my answers on homework assignment before handing in. Thanks so much for your help.
1. Many radioactive nuclei release energy in the form of Electromagnetic radiation, such as gamma rays?
2. The n/p ratio of stable istotopes starts to become greater than 1 for elements whose atomic number is greater than about 20.
3. A fusion reaction is always exergonic?
4. The larger the value of half-life the more stable the isotope?
5. Alpha particles from sources outside the body do not penetrate the skin?
Explanation / Answer
1. Many radioactive nuclei release energy in the form of emission is that of electromagnetic radiation such as x-rays or gamma-rays.
2. n/p ratio > 1 for elements with atomic number more than 20 have neutron to proton ratio of more than one and hence get unstable.
3. A fusion reaction is always exoergic.
4. The larger the value of half-life the more stable the isotope. True
5. Alpha particles from sources outside the body do not penetrate the skin. False
Because of their charge and large mass, alpha particles are easily absorbed by materials, and they can travel only a few centimetres in air. They can be absorbed by tissue paper or the outer layers of human skin (about 40 micrometres, equivalent to a few cells deep).
