Question
Oh my!!! Santa went to the Bahamas, wrecked his air-bag safety system deployed. His clever little elves designed the air bag to inflate by producing nitrogen gas from the decomposition of sodium nitride as shown below: NaN3 right arrow Na+N2 If the elves design the air bag system properly, it will inflate with N2 to a volume of 40.0 L. If the elves did not design the air bag system properly, it might inflate to more than 40.0 L thus ripping Santa's face off and spoiling our beloved "Winter Holidays". The accident happen on a day when the temperature was 25 degree C and the pressure was 0.980 atm. What volume of N2 was produced as a result of the elves loading the airbag with 78.2g of NaN3? Will Santa's face be ripped off?Explanation / Answer
NaN3 == > Na + N2
moles of 78.2 g NaN3 = 78.2/65 = 1.2 moles
so moles of N2 formed will be = 1.2
now,
PV = nRT
Volume of N2 = 1.2*0.0821*298/0.98
= 29.95 L
so 29.95 is less than 40 L , face will not be ripped off
