layer w i.. p. 24, #2 bicarb 2. p. 24, #3 3. The solubility of adipic acid in water is 1.5 g separa per 100 mL at 15 C, and 0.6 g per 100 mL in After ether at the same temperature. for so a. Remember the Kd is usually the ratio of solubilities. What is the Kd of adipic acid adipic ac expressed as pic acid rath b. Calculate the fraction of adipic acid that fract can be extracted from a 50 mL solution of Pro adipic acid in water into a 30-mL portions of imam ether. test Modifications and Notes on Procedure

Explanation / Answer

3.(a)

Kd = Solubility of adipic acid in water / Solubility of adipic acid in ether = [adipic acid]water / [adipic acid]ether

Now,

[adipic acid]water = mass of adipic acid in water / Volume of water = 1.5 g / 100 mL

[adipic acid]ether = mass of adipic acid in ether / volume of ether = 0.6 g /100 mL

So,

Kd = [adipic acid]water / [adipic acid]ether = 1.5 / 0.6 = 2.5

(b)

x = mass of adipic acid in water

y = mass of adipic acid in ether

Kd = [adipic acid]water / [adipic acid]ether

2.5 = (x / 50) / ( y / 30)

2.5 = (x/y) * 30/50

x/y = 2.5 * 5 / 3 = 4.17

So,

fraction of adipic acid that can be extracted from 50 mL solution of adipic acid in water into 30 mL portion of ether = 4.17
