Question

For the following question, please explain how you arrived to the answer.

A catabolic pathway exists for compound A, proceeding to compound F in 5 steps. Compound F proceeds through either an aerobic three step pathway to Compound I or a two step pathway to compound K. Compound F is a feedforward activator for the enzymes that catalyze the formation of both I and K. Compound G is a feedback inhibitor for the initial enzyme in the joint pathway and compound J is a feedback inhibitor for the enzyme that produces F.

a). If ATP is involved in regulation of this pathway, should it be an inhibitor or an activator? Why?

b). Where should the regulation in b) take place? Why?

Explanation / Answer

a)

The inhibitors are the enzymes which cause negative feedbacks . Now catabolism is the degradative process to release energy converting it into the form of ATP.   If we have large amounts of ATP in the system and low amounts of ADP, the cell would have no need to make more so it will cause a negative feedback or inhibitory effect.

b) catabolism takes place in the cytosol of the cell and the mitochondria
