Explanation / Answer

Stroke also called as brain attack occurs when blood supply to the brain is compromised either by blockage or by rupture of blood vessels. They are called as ischeamic stroke and haemorrhagic stroke respectively. Stroke may cause permanent damage, long term disability and death. The signs and symptoms associated with stroke are sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arms and legs especially on one side, sudden confusion, trouble speaking, sudden trouble seeing, difficulty in walking, loss of balance, lack of co-ordination and sudden severe headache. These symptoms of stroke are different in both men and women and different across culture and race due to differences in life style and eating habits. The risk factors of stroke in Hispanic men are high blood pressure, diabetes, overweight or high BMI and smoking. Beginning treatment as early as possible is the key to success in stroke treatment. The treatment begins as soon as emergency medical services team arrives to take the patient to the hospital. Brain scans like CT and MRI will show the type of stroke. In ischemic stroke, if the patient reaches hospital within 3 hours, thrombolytic therapy with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is started. Endovascular procedures are done in some patients. In heamorrhagic stroke, metal clips are used to stop the bleeding from aneurysms.
