Question
a)
Silver thiocyanate is often used as a test for silver ion in qualitative analysis. Using the solubility product constant (Ksp = 1.1E-12), calculate the molar solubility of silver thiocyanatein water.
s = _____M
b)
Magnesium ammonium phosphate is an unusual salt in that it dissolves to form Mg2+, NH4+, and PO43- ions. The Ksp for magnesium ammonium phosphate is 2.5E-13. Calculate its molar solubility and its solubility in grams per liter.
= _____M
= _____g/L
c)
For iron(III) hydroxide, Fe(OH)3, Ksp equals 2.5E-39. Calculate: (a) its molar solubility (recall that taking the square root twice gives the fourth root); (b) the pOH of the saturated solution.
(a) = _____M
pOH = _____
Explanation / Answer
Silver thiocyanate is often used as a test for silver ion in qualitative analysis. Using the solubility product constant (Ksp = 1.1E-12), calculate the molar solubility of silver thiocyanatein water.
Solution:
AgSCN --> Ag+ + SCN-
Ksp = [Ag+] [SCN-]
Now if solubility of AgSCN = x
then [Ag+] = [SCN-] = x
1.1 X 10^-12 = x X x
so x = 1.048 X 10^-6 molar
so solubility of AgSCN = 1.048 X 10^-6 molar
