Question 69

Why is it difficult to be sure whether humans are experiencing endocrine disrupting effects from the chemicals in our environment, and how is the situation for fish living if waters affected by discharged treated sewage different in that regard? What is a primary piece of evidence supporting the idea that humans have been affected by endocrine active compounds in the environment? What is "BPA" and have been its two primary uses in consumer products? What primary chemical purpose have phthalates been used for, and give a chemical material in your life in which you are likely to encounter some phthalates. What does "intersex'' mean for fish?

Explanation / Answer

65) Human health depends on well functioning endocrine system to regulate the release of certain harmones that are essential for the function such as metabolism, growth and development. Some substances known as endocrine receptors can alter the function.human exposure can occur via ingestion of food dust and water, inhalation of gases skin contact etc.clear evidence exist that EDC cause several adverse effect on wild life but limited evidence exust fir the potential of these chemicals to cause these effect on humans at environmental exposure level.

A variety of EDC are found in aquatic environment.Evidence from field study suggest these causes reproductive alternation in fish, feminism of male fish, abnormal gonald structure and diffrentiation, intersexuality and sex reversal, decreased sperm count and expression of egg yolk protein in male fishes.

66)Exposure to EDC led to many health problem including the potential for such chemicals to contribute to the development of non-descended testes in young males, breast cancer in women, prostate cancer in male, development effect on the nervous system in children, hyperactivity in children and thyroid cancer.

67) Bisphenol A (BPA) is structural component in polycarbonate beverages bottles. It is also a component in metal can coating which protect the food from directly contacting metal surface. As in case when foods are in direct contact with any packaging material ,small amounts of this material may migrate into food and can be consumed with it.

68) Phthalates are mainly used as plasticizers(substances added to plastic to increase the flexibility, transperency, durability and longevity).Phathalates are manufactured by reacting phthalic acid anhydride with alcohol(s) that range fron methanol and ethanol(C1/C2)up to tridecyl alcohol (C13) either a stright chain or with some branching.
