Question
Q: This chemical element Hydrogen reacts with nitric oxide in the following reaction: 2 H2 (g) + 2 NO(g) 2 H2O(g) + N2 (g) The following rate data were obtained for different concentrations of the two reactants at a certain temperature:
Experiment [H2 ], M [NO], M Initial rate (M/s) 1 0.212 0.136 0.0248 2 0.212 0.272 0.0991 3 0.424 0.544 0.793 4 0.848 0.544 1.59
(a) What is the order in H2 ?
(b) What is the order in NO?
(c) What is the rate constant, k?
I need some details or this problem to better understand.
Explanation / Answer
2H2+2NO(g)---->2H2O(g) + N2(g)
for determine oder of reactant we kept concentration one reactant constant & other varies . The effect of change of concentration on rate of reaction show the oder of reactant in that reaction.
b) In exp. 1&2 con. of H2 is constant. Conc. of NO is increases 2 times , but rate of react of reaction increases 4 times i.e, 2^2. so oder for [NO] = 2 . oder of [NO] in reaction is second oder.
a) In exp 3&4 concentration of [NO] is constant. Concentration of H2 is increases 2 times, rate of reaction is also increase by 2 times. So oder of H2 in reaction = 1 i.e, first oder.
c) rate = K [H2][NO]^2
K = [H2][NO] / rate = [.212] [0.136]^2 / 0.0248 = 0.1581
