Question

(TCO 5) Provide answers for (a)–(d) based the following unbalanced chemical equation.
Al + Cl2-> AlCl3
(a) Balance the equation. (5 points)
(b) How many moles of AlCl3 are produced from 0.75 mole of Cl2? Show your work. (5 points)
(c) What is the molar mass of AlCl3? Show your work. (5 points)
(d) Calculate the number of grams of AlCl3 produced from 0.75 mol Cl2. Show your work. (5 points)

A gas at a temperature of 205 degrees C occupies a volume of 305 mL. Assuming constant pressure, determine the volume at 25 degrees C. Show your work. (Points : 5)

Explanation / Answer

a) 2Al + 3 Cl2 > 2 AlCl3

b) 0.75 mol Cl2 * (2 mol AlCl3 / 3 mol Cl2) = 0.5 mol AlCl3

c)

Al = 26.981 g/mol
Cl = 35.453 g/mol

(1 x Al) + (3 x Cl) = (1 x 26.981g/mol) + (3 x 35.453g.mol)
26.981g/mol + 106.359 g/mol = 133.340g/mol

d)

from problem b we have calculated moles

grams of ALCl3 = moles x melecular weight

= 0.5 x 133.340 = 66.67 grams
