Question
1. The concentration of FeNCS 2+ in each of the Standard Solutions at equilibrium is taken to be the same as the initial concentration of KSCN in the solution. Explain the rational behind equating the initial concentration of KSCN to that of [FeNCS2+]
2. In addition, the ultimate goal is to determine the equilibrium constant of the iron (III) /thiocynate syste. How does the preparation and use of the Standard Solution in Part 1 contribute to this larger goal? (What data will Part 1 give you that will help you in the overall analysis?
Please help answer question 2 mainly
Explanation / Answer
The eqution:
Fe+3 and SCN-1 <-> FeSCN+2 (equilibrium)
therefore:
Keq = [FeSCN+2] / [SCN-1][Fe+3]
You need each concentration to determine Keq
Standard Solution
#1 = will help you shift and set [Fe+3] concentration. Since you know Fe+3 concentratino you will be able to set this equilibrium
#2 = KSCN initial concentration is known. The total volume is known. Therefore you may calculate total moles of K+, SCN-1 and of course KSCN
Knowing all concentrations will allow you to claculate Keq
[FeSCN+2] from molar balance with respect to standard
[SCN-1] molar balance of standar solution of KSCN
[Fe+3] = from Solution I
Knowing all data you will be able to calculate Keq as a number
